I recently started experimenting with mashups under the DJ studio name Triple Prime Productions.
(from wikipedia) A mashup or blend is a song or composition created by blending two or more songs, usually by overlaying the vocal track of one song seamlessly over the music track of another.
In my opinion, out of the eighteen or so tracks that I have created, two are good, three are tolerable, and the rest should be kept in the experimentation category.
From this experience, I have learned a few things:
- Copyright laws are incredibly confusing (i.e. I hope I don’t get sued)
To the extent that such works are ‘transformative’ of original content, they may find protection from copyright claims under the “fair use” doctrine of copyright law.
- Taylor Swift and the Black Eyed Peas rarely sound good together
- Cross-browser music players have come a long way (see jPlayer)
- Bandcamp is incredibly powerful
In the near future, I will be switching from mashup creation to remixes and original compositions. This was my original expectation of what Triple Prime Productions would become. In the meantime, be sure to download the three albums and buy me a latte.
